Art in the Square Oct. 16 & 17

Art in the Square, a free outdoor art festival featuring works from 150 contemporary and fine artists from across the country, comes to Georgetown’s downtown Square this weekend. Artists in this juried art show will display and sell pieces in a wide range of media including clay, digital, drawing, fiber, glass, jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, metalwork, mixed-media, sculpture, and wood.

Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 16 and Sunday, October 17. Children can create their own works-of-art at the Kids Create area on Seventh Street at the festival. For more details, including information on artwork and the artists, go to www.artinsquare.com.

Annexation Public Hearing Notice

The City of Georgetown is considering annexation of various parcels and right-of-way totaling 5,946.52 acres as described below. Public Hearings on each annexation area will be held at the November 9, 2010, City Council Meeting and the November 23, 2010, City Council Meeting. The meetings will be held at the City Council Chambers, 101 E. 7th Street, at the northeast corner of Seventh and Main Streets, beginning at 6:00 PM.

The areas being considered for annexation are:

(1) Approximately 5,495.81 acres, more or less, out of the Thompson, Powell and Evans Surveys, designated as 2010 Area SW1, located south of Leander Road and West of IH35.

(2) Approximately 450.71 acres, more or less, out of the Thompson and Donagan Surveys, designated as 2010 Area SW2, located north of Leander Road and south of the San Gabriel River South Fork.

Flooding Recovery for Unmet Needs

City of Georgetown and Williamson County officials have received notification that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied Governor Perry’s request for a federal disaster declaration for Texas counties affected by flooding from Tropical Storm Hermine. Damages caused by the flooding did not meet the threshold for federal recovery assistance.

No funding will be available for reimbursement of flood cleanup and recovery costs already incurred by home and business owners.

“It is unfortunate that there will be no federal funding to assist with flood damage recovery costs,” says Georgetown Mayor George Garver. “We still have residents who are repairing their homes and businesses from the flooding. However, I’m pleased with the leadership that the County is bringing to the process.”

For home or business owners with unmet needs—flood damage that has not yet been repaired—state and local governments are working on two methods to provide assistance.
